Why do they do that?

I was on my way to shoot a wedding last night and drove through Burger King for my requisite hamburger to tide me over until I could grab a bite at the reception. The order box addressed me and a woman's voice said, "Welcome to Burger King! May I take your order?" So I placed my order, and then a man's voice confirmed what I had requested. Why do fast food companies feel the need to have a recording greet the person at the order box? Surely it can't be a labor cost issue. How much more trouble is it for a real person, the person actually taking my order, to greet me?

I've either a) never noticed that, or b) never had that happen at the drive-through. Strange. It doesn't seem like it could possibly save them that much time, either.

That happens to us all the time! So weird! The other day a man with a heavy Indian accent took our order. I said, "There's no way he's for real." We drove forward and met a chubby white teenage boy. As we were starting to drive away he said, "Thank you and have a nice day" in the same accent. That threw us off more than the fake voice greeting us.

ok, prepare to be wierded out even more. The guy who took your order probably was IN INDIA Jennifer. I don't know how it could work, but companies have started outsourcing their drivethroughs to computer operators in other countries. Somehow it's quicker. I'm not even making this up. I've read about it in several places!

That IS really weird! So you mean that kid was just moving his lips to the recorded voice that said, "Tank yu veddy much!" Pretty sneaky.
