The Name of Jesus Christ

"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." This thought crossed my mind when my alarm woke me up on Sunday morning at 7:30, which felt like 6:30 thanks to Daylight Savings Time. It was so tempting to shut off the alarm, roll over and drift off to sleep again. But I really love going to church on Sunday mornings and when I miss, my week feels off and empty. I got up, got ready, got the kids ready, and off we headed. We were a little bit late, which never makes me happy because it means we miss out on a little bit of the worship music. That is one of my favorite parts of the service, singing praises to my God, and I don't like to miss out on even one note!

Fortunately, we arrived about halfway through the first song. Then next song started, and it was one of my most favorites ever. My sweet friend Rebecca Sehnert wrote it with our worship pastor, Mike Naber. The first time I heard this song was at the end of December, 2013. That Sunday was my worship team rotation, and I was singing with Rebecca, Jenny, and Mike. Our rehearsal notes said "Special for Rebecca. Mike backups." So Jenny and I didn't really learn it, as we thought it would just be Rebecca and Mike singing. Because we didn't have a rehearsal that week, we found out about 7:45 that Sunday morning that we WERE going to be singing along with them! So we spent some extra time after the service run through and before the service started learning the song. It was a sweet time with my worship team sisters and I'll never forget it.

The song itself is SO powerful. It just makes my heart and soul so very happy. There's so much truth in every single line of the song. My favorite part is the bridge; there is something so amazing about saying or singing the different names of Jesus. This song brings me closer to God than pretty much any other worship song I've heard (and I've heard a LOT, having served on worship teams since 1998!).

Thank you, Rebecca and Mike, for your obedience to what He has called you to do - so many lives are blessed and enriched as a result. Helping people prepare their hearts for worship and engagement with our King is holy ground.

The Name of Jesus Christ

The Name above all names
The Name that gives me strength
The Name I love to say
Jesus

The Name that conquers fear
The Name that draws me near
The Name I long to hear
Jesus O Jesus

Let every heart cry out
Let every knee humbly bow
Let every hand be lifted high
At the Name of Jesus Christ

The Name that breaks all chains
The Name of truth and grace
The Name I live to praise
Jesus O Jesus

Wonderful Counselor

God with us
Prince of Peace
Everlasting Son of God
Powerful
Mighty Lord
Our Defender
Our Savior

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

I saw this word art on Pinterest a while back and it struck a nerve at the time. I struggle to remember that there is only one of me, and to quote Martha Graham, "There is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.

The world will not have it."

When I read the pinned quote, my mind jumped immediately to how many ways I consider myself not good enough. But while in the car driving home from the grocery store this morning, I realized that it works the other way as well. To compare what I have to what others do not have, to wrestle constantly with why I was not born into a life of poverty, has the great potential to steal the joy of my many blessings.

I asked the Lord the other morning why I'm so richly blessed. The answer I got back was, "I've blessed you so you can be a blessing." And so I try to start each day asking Him to show me how I can be a blessing to others.

************
Well, good grief. I hit publish on the last post, and then looked at my list of blog posts. This one has been sitting in draft mode since November 2012. Y'all. That's just sad. So I'm getting out of my own way, stopping the blocking my own expression, and the world will have it. Who knows how I was going to continue on with what I had started to say. But the first three paragraphs feel important, so here you go. :)

Why I Hate Falling Back for DST

Six years ago was the last time I truly enjoyed falling back with the time change. Six years ago, I was pregnant with my first child and had absolutely no idea just how drastically my life would change on December 26, 2006. I certainly had no inkling that my hatred for moving the clocks back an hour in the fall would make me crazy at times.

No, I was ignorant to such things. I LOVED falling back in November (and October, before it was changed). I had an extra hour in my weekend! It seemed to make the weekend move more slowly, and that was always a welcome perception. I usually had no trouble sleeping in, but if I did wake up early on that Sunday morning, I was happy to see it was an hour earlier and I had more time to sleep! When I sang at church, I could stay up an hour later and not wish I had gone to bed sooner the night before. I didn't understand why my coworkers who were also parents would groan about the time change. I mean, I understood it in March because we all had to give back that hour we had so luxuriously been given in November and I would spend the next week or so trying to adjust my body to losing that hour of sleep. But why was it such a big deal in the fall?

And then I had a child.

I still maintain that whomever created the concept of Daylight Savings Time was definitely not someone who was in charge of small children.

Anyone who is rearing a small child knows that the child's circadian rhythm does not CARE what the time on the clock says. If that child has been waking up at 6:30 in the morning prior to falling back and "gaining" an hour, that child will awaken at 5:30 in the morning. The fact that the clock rudely reads 5:30 AM makes no difference to the child. They'll be wide awake and READY TO PLAY! Or eat. Or watch TV. Or whatever it is that child likes to do when s/he first gets up in the morning. Bring on the coffee, I say!

So tonight at 7:30 when I was getting our 2 children ready for bed, I realized that putting them to bed at 7:30 was really like putting them to bed at 6:30 and they would likely be awake before 5 am. And once my kids are awake, convincing them that it's a good idea to go back to sleep is darn near impossible.

We ended up ordering pizza (thank you, Domino's for your gluten-free crust!) and letting them watch Mickey Mouse. We effectively moved their bedtime up an hour, so hopefully they will sleep just a little longer in the morning!

Bring on the coffee!

Clear counter

Hooray! Wonder how long it will stay like this...

Keeping It Real

I know I can't be the only one whose bathroom counter looks like this. Here's hoping I manage to get it cleared, if only for a little while. It's driving me nuts!!!

How (not) to Fix a Brisket

Ingredients and supplies:
crock pot
2-3 lb brisket
Stubbs Bar-B-Q Spice Rub
Colgin mesquite flavor Liquid Smoke

Remove crock pot from cabinet, place on counter and plug in.
Remove brisket from package and place in crock pot.
Turn on crock pot and set it to cook on low.
Realize you forgot to put the spice rub on the brisket.
Remove brisket from crock pot, turn pot off, and place brisket on cutting board.
Liberally sprinkle spice rub on both sides of brisket and rub in.
Try not to gag as the fat lifts as you rub the spice on the brisket.
Contemplate becoming vegetarian (you'd consider vegan but you enjoy honey, eggs, gummy bears, and marshmallows too much).
Place brisket back into crock pot.
Place lid on crock pot and set the pot to cook on low.
Realize you have forgotten to add the Liquid Smoke.
Remove lid from crock pot and dump bottle of Liquid Smoke into the pot on top of the brisket.
Replace lid.
Contemplate going back to bed. Clearly you need more sleep.

This Week's Blog Assignment (TWBA) from My Great Retreat

I just joined another forum called My Great Retreat (mygreatretreat.com - if you join, my username is joana1n for the referral). They have a weekly blog assignment and since this blog, my original blogger blog that I started long before I had kids, doesn't get much love any more, I thought I'd start doing at least a weekly post. We'll see how long I keep up with it.

Anyway, this week's blog assignment is "What do you enjoy snacking on?"

Organic Gummy Bears, since I don't do Red 40 - it makes me crazy hyper. Add a cold bottle of Coca Cola made in Mexico (so it is made with sugar, not high-fructose corn syrup), and YUM. Best. Snack. Ever. !!!

And the last couple of days I've enjoyed munching on the gluten-free lemon bars I made. They contain eggs and everyone else in this house (except the baby) is allergic to eggs, so they are mine, all mine.

No Jacket = BRRRR!!!

I looked at the weather app before leaving the house the other evening.
52 degrees. I was wearing a long sleeve t shirt and a heavy sweatshirt so I figured I would be fine without a jacket.

I got in the car and after pulling out of the garage, started getting really cold. And the car got colder and colder... Sure didn't feel like 52 degrees!

Because it wasn't!

Wished I had taken a jacket after all!

Win a Dyson D25

I wish I could say our vacuum sucks, but it doesn't. At least, not as well as everyone else's who owns a Dyson. We wonder if we got a dud, but we have had it for a few years and I'm sure it's not under warranty. Too lazy to take it anywhere to have it serviced (too lazy, or just too busy with two small children)...so I'm trying to win a new vacuum to see if we can find the Dyson love!

You can win, too - go here:

It's an amusing read, too. :-)

Live Tree vs. Fake Tree

I've always been a fake tree proponent, probably mostly because I seem to be allergic to most evergreens and the idea of having one in my home for a month doesn't appeal to me. I like the ease of a fake tree and the fact that I don't have to remember to water it. One of my biggest fears is having a house fire, and a dry tree is definitely a fire hazard (yes, my mother did nickname me Sparky!).

This video makes me even more glad my tree is fake!

Gifts of Grace

Nov. 2nd - Nov. 30th

My church is partnering with another church across town to provide underprivileged kids with a gift this Christmas season. Our goal is to provide 800 wrapped toys for
this community need. Please help us make a difference in a child’s life! If you're interested in helping, leave a comment and your email address and I will get in touch with you regarding the specifics.

Thanks!
